Friday Unbound: 3rd August 2018

This week's Friday Unbound round-up features a 70-year-old kayaker, a mid-week microadventure and a mountain-top proposal gone (sort of) wrong

#1 Aged 70, Aleksander Doba kayaked from New Jersey to Le Conquet, France - it was the third time he'd paddled across the Atlantic Ocean but his most dangerous crossing by far. Using a self-designed vessel and travelling under his own steam, Doba made the crossing in 110 days.

#2 Climbing the Matterhorn is no small feat - climbing it in a billowing, 19th-century Victorian dress is astonishing. Here, Outside Online detail the incredible life and accomplishments of Lucy Walker, the first woman to summit the Matterhorn and the Eiger.

#3 We're all well acquainted with the 9-5 - it's the 5-9 that most of us are pretty bad at making best use of. We documented our own microadventure recently but this video from the Royal Scottish Geographical Society takes a witty look at camping wild on a work night. It's worth a few minutes of your time.

#4 Proposing to your beloved on top of a mountain after days of hard climbing to get there - for climbing junkies, that's surely the dream. Unfortunately for these two particular individuals, he managed to lose the ring on the journey up the Grand Teton - a massive 'oops'. Luckily, she said yes anyway.

#5 This photo album of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Range is a love letter to dirtbag backpacking and the carefree lifestyle born from 12 months of travelling by car and foot, all captured on 35mm film.
